Happy Birthday to {Philadelphia} Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin!

Happy Birthday to one of America’s Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin! Hugely instrumental in the building of this great City of Brotherly Love, Benjamin Franklin could simply be given the titles of statesman, scientist and inventor. But Franklin’s resume is extensive and many of his impressive hats should be praised, such as: publisher of the Pennsylvania Gazette, author of Poor Richard’s Almanac, member of the Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention, influential signer of the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Postmaster General, Abolitionist, and American Commissioner to Paris.

Benjamin Franklin Founding Fathers Philadelphia Icon

To really understand why most Philadelphians, if not all Americans, consider Benjamin Franklin our dearest Founding Father, one only needs to read his own autobiographical tale. Just a year after Benjamin Franklin’s death in 1790, his autobiography, entitled “Memoires De La Vie Privee,” was published in Paris in 1791. Two years later, the first English translation, “The Private Life of the Late Benjamin Franklin, LL.D. Originally Written By Himself,” was published in London in 1793. Known today simply as “The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin,” this slice of American history was originally written for Franklin’s son William, then the Governor of New Jersey. As a historical journal presented from father to son.

The autobiography portrays a fascinating picture of life in Philadelphia, as well as Franklin’s shrewd observations on the literature, philosophy and religion of America’s Colonial and Revolutionary periods. Franklin wrote the first five chapters of his autobiography while living in England in 1771, then resumed it again thirteen years later (1784-85) while living in Paris and later in 1788 when he returned to the United States. Franklin ends the account of his life in 1757 when he was 51 years old.  Although he died in 1790,  Franklin chose not to include his later 30 years in his autobiography.

Considered to be the greatest autobiography produced in Colonial America, so many of Franklin’s reasonings and observations are still applicable in today’s complex society.

Van Gogh Up Close, a major exhibition organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Canada, presents a group of the artist´s most daring and innovative works that broke with the past and dramatically altered the course of modern painting. Made between 1886 and 1890 in Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy, and Auvers, the works in the exhibition concentrate on an important and hitherto overlooked aspect of Van Gogh´s work: fine details or “close–ups,” that bring familiar subjects such as landscape elements, still lifes, and flowers into the extreme foreground of the composition or focus on them in ways that are entirely unexpected and without precedent. The exhibition includes more than 40 landscapes and still lifes, which have not been seen together or identified as critical to our understanding of Van Gogh´s artistic achievement. Van Gogh Up Close, including major loans from museums and private collections in Europe, North America, and Japan, will only be exhibited in Philadelphia.

January is National Hot Tea Month! Celebrate at The Rittenhouse with Afternoon Tea in the Mary Cassatt Tearoom

afternoon tea rittenhouse philadelphia hotels

January is National Hot Tea Month!  Steeped in tradition, enjoying the perfect cup of tea is one of life’s greatest pleasures! Known for our Traditional British Afternoon Tea, we pride ourselves in knowing plenty of tea time trivia!  Such as:

  • 5000 years ago, the Emperor of China was the first to enjoy hot tea by steeping leaves from the herb Camelia simensis, a warm-weather evergreen.  To this day, all tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant.
  • Today, tea is the world’s second most popular beverage consumed, second only to water.
  • Americans drink 50 billion cups of tea each year.
  • The first tea bags were created by Thomas Sullivan in 1904, and made of silk.
  • The difference between Black, Green, and Oolong tea is a result of the changes that occur during the actual processing of the tea leaves.
    • Green tea is not oxidized at all—the leaves are steamed, rolled and dried while black tea is allowed to oxidize for two to four hours.
    • Oolong tea falls somewhere between green and black teas, as the tea leaves are only partially oxidized.
  • Black Tea is the most commonly consumed tea in the world accounting for approximately 80% of all consumption. In the United States well over 90% of the tea consumed is black.
  • Herbal teas do not come from Camellia sinensis, but are an infusion of leaves, roots, bark, seeds or flowers of other plants. Most of them are caffeine free but as they are mixed with Camellia sinensis leaves, they may contain caffeine.
  • Like wine, each tea takes its name from the district in which it’s grown, and each district is known for producing tea with unique flavor and character.
  • The caffeine content of tea is 40 mg in one cup of tea as compared to 99 mg of caffeine in a cup of coffee.
  • Black and Green teas contain a certain type of antioxidant called flavenoids.
  • To be labeled “decaffeinated,” the caffeine content per cup of tea must be approximately 5 mg.

We invite you to celebrate National Tea Month at The Rittenhouse! For reservations, please call 215-546-9000.
